Everything you need to know about visiting the beautiful Isla Icacos by catamaran. This little island off Puerto Rico’s coast is home to white sand beaches and turquoise waters, and a MUST if you are visiting the Island of Encanto.
What is Isla Icacos?
Imagine a tiny slice of paradise, where the sand is impossibly white, the water is every shade of blue, and the only footprints in sight are your own. That’s Isla Icacos—a small, uninhabited island off the coast of Puerto Rico that’s perfect for snorkeling, sunbathing, and living out your deserted island dreams (minus the whole survival thing).
Where is Isla Icacos?
Isla Icacos is part of the La Cordillera Nature Reserve, a group of small islands off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico. It sits just a few miles off the coast of Fajardo, a coastal town about an hour from San Juan.
Since it’s a nature reserve, you won’t find any buildings, restaurants, or facilities—just pristine beaches, crystal-clear water, and the occasional iguana living its best life.
When is the Best Time to Visit Puerto Rico and the island?
Puerto Rico is a year-round destination, but if you want perfect weather for your Isla Icacos adventure, aim for the dry season from December to April.
- Best Weather: December–April (sunny, breezy, and minimal rain)
- Fewer Crowds: May–November (warmer, more humid, and a higher chance of rain, but fewer tourists)
If you’re visiting during hurricane season (June–November), definitely check the weather before booking a boat tour!
How Do You Get to Isla Icacos?
There are two ways to get to Isla Icacos:
1. Catamaran or Boat Tour (The Fun Way)
The most popular and easiest way to get to Icacos is by booking a catamaran or boat tour. These tours typically depart from the Fajardo Marina and take about 30 minutes to reach the island. They often include drinks, food, and snorkeling gear—because nothing says vacation like sipping a rum punch on a catamaran.
This is what I did so I can share a bit more about my own personal experience.
2. Private Water Taxi (The DIY Way)
If you prefer to do things on your own schedule, you can also take a water taxi from Fajardo. This is a good option if you want more flexibility with your time, but keep in mind there are no amenities on the island, so you’ll need to bring your own food, drinks, and shade.
Where to Stay in Fajardo & San Juan
If you’re planning to visit Isla Icacos, you’ll likely stay in Fajardo (closer to the marina) or San Juan (the capital city– more lively and historic and well connected to the airport). Here are some great places to stay:
Fajardo (Best for Early Boat Departures)
- Budget: Junzi Hostel – A budget-friendly guesthouse with dorm rooms and close to Fajardo.
- Mid-Range: El Conquistador Resort – A stunning resort with its own private island, pools, and breathtaking views.
San Juan (Best for Exploring the City Too)
- Budget: Casa Santurce – A laid-back, affordable hostel near Condado with a great social atmosphere.
- Mid-Range: Numero Uno Beach House – A boutique hotel right on Ocean Park Beach, perfect for a chill yet stylish stay.
My Experience Visiting Isla Icacos
I booked a catamaran tour that picked me up in San Juan and took us via air-conditioned bus to the port of Fajardo. From there, we met our crew, hopped on a catamaran, and set sail toward Icacos.
On the ride over, we were treated to unlimited drinks (thank you, piña coladas), upbeat music, and some of the friendliest crew members I’ve ever met. The boat ride itself was smooth and only took about 30 minutes before we reached paradise.
The moment we stepped onto the island, I knew it was special. The sand felt like powdered sugar, the water was so clear I could see fish swimming around my ankles, and there wasn’t a single building in sight—just pure, untouched nature.
Beach Time & Snorkeling
After anchoring, we hopped ashore, where we could explore a bit of the uninhabited island or relax on the beach. No vendors or restaurants– just a few other boat groups, although we got lucky and most arrived after us.
We could also use snorkel equipment from the boat or just float around in the shallow waters.
The visibility was insane! I spotted colorful fish, coral formations, and even a few starfish chilling on the ocean floor. If you’re into snorkeling, Icacos is definitely the place to do it.

Lunch on the Boat
The crew prepared a delicious buffet-style lunch with sandwiches, fresh fruit, and more drinks (because why stop at one piña colada?). We ate on the boat, enjoying the view of the island as the sun sparkled over the water, and then had a dance party, which was mostly due to me loving reggaeton and encouraging everyone to dance with me.
Heading Back
After a few blissful hours, it was time to head back. The ride home was just as fun, with music blasting and everyone dancing on deck. By the time we reached Fajardo, I was sun-kissed, salty, and already dreaming about my next trip back.
