How to visit the Airplane Graveyard in Bangkok, Thailand
This unique tourist destination completely represents Bangkok. Here’s how to get there, what to bring, and everything else you need to know about visiting the airplane graveyard.
Inside the city of Bangkok lies a scrap yard of airplanes. The owner bought the planes, stripped and sold them for parts, and just left them. Now some families have moved into the yard and live in the remains of some of the planes. They’ve opened the yard for tourists, although you do have to pay a small fee for them to let you inside.
What to bring
The last thing you want to be is unprepared. A dress and heels may be beautiful in photos, but it’s going to be hard to climb when you aren’t dressed appropriately.
Cash – You will need to pay the family to let you in, as well as a taxi to get there
Comfortable shoes – You’re climbing around broken parts so make sure to wear appropriate shoes
Camera – So you can get some really unique photos
Water – Bangkok is HOT and you’ll be in the heat for awhile. Make sure to bring a bottle of water
Getting there
The airplane graveyard is still within Bangkok, but a little far from the more tourist areas. You have a few different ways of arriving, depending on how much you want to spend and where you’re staying.
Transportation
Taxi – The easiest way but of course most expensive way would be a direct taxi. If you use the Grab Taxi app you will find cheaper prices than what you get on the street.
Train + Taxi – Another route would to be to take the Airport Link train to Hua Man station. From there, a taxi is cheaper to the entrance.
Canal boat – The cheapest and maybe easiest way to get there would be to take the canal boat to Wat Sriboonruang. From the pier, the airplane graveyard is a short walk.
Getting inside
You will see a fence and a sign that says “No Entry.” If there isn’t anyone already waiting at the fence, just shout a little bit and someone from the family will come over to let you in. The price for entrance varies, depending on their mood and how susceptible they believe you are. You can negotiate, but normally the price should be around 300 baht. The money goes directly to the family for them to live, so try not to feel too bad about it.
Exploring
You made it inside! Have fun exploring, but keep in mind that this is basically a junkyard so watch your step!
There are several different types of planes for you to explore, with some older and some more intact than others. Stay away from the left side of the field because the family is living inside the fuselage.
You may need to walk around different sides of the structures to find a way inside. The coolest part for me was sitting in the abandoned cockpit!
Have you ever been to a tourist sight as unique as this?
