How to visit Lake Bled, Slovenia

Lake Bled is one the most beautiful places that I’ve been to and is an easy day trip from the capital of Slovenia: Ljubljana.

If you haven’t been to Slovenia, it should definitely be on your list! This country is one of the most beautiful in Europe, and CHEAP. While you’re there, be sure to check out the absolute best spot: Lake Bled.

Getting there

You have two public transport options to get to Lake Bled: by bus or by train

The bus takes around an hour and 20 minutes and leaves from Avtobusna postaja. You can view the timetable and buy tickets here, or when you arrive at the station. The buses run fairly frequently so you’ll never be stranded for long. The bus arrives at Union bus stop and at the bus station, and from there you can walk down to the lake. To get back you should go to the bus station.

There is also a train, although less frequent and a bit more complicated. It arrives at Jezero Bled station, which is located at the top of a hill on the Western side. The train comes five times a day and if you’re headed back to Ljubljana from there, you’ll have to check the physical time tables at the station. Bring your translator! Or just take a bus.

If you rent a car, it’s very close to the capital and you can go and visit other lakes in the area on the same trip!

Once there, you can spend a lot of time simply walking around the lake. It’s not that much of a hike, but beautiful views. I found myself pulling my phone out to take a picture every few minutes. It’s just absolutely beautiful. There are a few beaches on the northern side, where tourists and locals alike come to get their tan on.

In the city of Bled, you’ll find some quaint little restaurants and shops, along with pricier places with amazing views. I stopped in one restaurant for the classic Eastern European classic: fried cheese. I’m a cheese fanatic what can I say?

While in the city or on your way along the lake, try to go up and visit the castle. This fortress has existed since 1011 and now holds a historical museum. You can visit for the museum part of it, or see one of the amazing viewpoints of Lake Bled.

If you’re short on time you can also visit the island in the middle of the lake. Options for getting there are either renting your own rowboat (about 20 euros per hour) or join one of the bigger boats for about 12 euros per person.

Although it wasn’t available while I was there, you can also do some stand-up paddle boarding and there are some waterpark type of equipment for kids young and old. The region is also full of great hikes if you have the time!

I spent most of my time wandering around, and of course having a nice swim. Perfect for a summer day!

Around the area, there are other lakes to visit, providing you have the time. At the end of the day I took the bus back to Ljubljana to conclude one of the best day trips I’ve been on.

Have you ever visited Lake Bled? What do you think about this beautiful country?

Nice to meet you!! I’m a small town Texas girl w Nice to meet you!! I’m a small town Texas girl who has since lived abroad and traveled to over 50 countries.Growing up, travel seemed so unattainable and just not in the stars for me. I was always interested in different cultures and languages, but the biggest cultural experience I had in my small town was the taco truck down the street. Now, I’ve lived in 4 countries, learned 3 foreign languages, and have discovered that travel doesn’t need to be for the uber rich or dual nationality. I’ve created a lifestyle for myself that lends itself to travel, adventure, and new experiences.I’ve discovered countries with a backpack, from the back of a motorcycle (@thetejanabiker), on a student visa, and hopefully soon from the left seat of a single engine airplane (as soon as I get my license!!)If any of this resonates with you, you’re in the right place.
Welcome to the adventure my friends 🗺️
