It’s easy to go off the beaten track in Bangkok if you know where to look! While exploring Bangkok, you may be wanting to see more of the city outside the main tourist spots, along with a few more unusual sights. Here’s a list of unusual things to do in Bangkok that are great for exploring the city more in-depth.

Exploring Bangkok

Bangkok is an amazing city full of history and culture. It’s one of my favorite cities in Southeast Asia due to it’s unique combination of modern and old world.

After visiting Bangkok a few times and traveling with a friend who lived there, I really got to know the city, both the tourist side and a bit more off the beaten track. I highly recommend these unusual things to do if you ever find yourself with a few days in Bangkok!

7 Unusual and off the beaten track Bangkok things to do:

1. Enjoy the greenery in Lumphini Park

It’s rare to see such expansive greenery in Bangkok but Lumphini is the place to do it! This park in the middle of the city has trails for joggers, restaurants, and boat rentals for the small lake in the middle. Watch out for the lizards though! The Asian water monitor lizards are estimated to have population of 400 inside the park. They’re mostly harmless and very cool to see, but it’s always better to stay a few feet back just in case.

2. Navigate through junk in the Airplane Graveyard

Airplane Graveyard Bangkok

Have you heard of this place?? This junkyard is filled with old airplanes just sitting in a field. Today, it has slowly started to become a tourist attraction for those that want a bit more of a unique experience. It’s definitely an interesting spot to see, although can be a bit tricky to get there! However, I HIGHLY recommend visiting the Airplane Graveyard while you’re in Bangkok.

3. Shop and eat at Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market

While this floating market is at least known to tourists, it’s still outside with cheaper prices and more locals. Certain sectors sell food, clothes, and other trinkets. When buying food, it’s more tapas style, so it’s a great chance to taste several different things!

4. Cuddle your heart out at The Animal Cafe

I’m an animal lover and animal cafes are crazy popular in Asia! For this particular one, you pay for a drink/dessert/etc., and just get to chill with animals! They have different ones depending on the day, but there are always cats and dogs vying for your attention.

5. Take the Chao Phraya River boat

Off the Beaten Path: Bangkok River Boat

When visiting Bangkok, most tourists tend to take a tuk tuk or taxi everywhere they go. Sometimes the more brave will take the MRT or metro system. The real travelers though, know that the river boat is the way to go. It’s insanely cheap, and has several different paths, one of which goes to the temples.

6. Get a perfect rooftop view

When visiting Bangkok, most tourists visit the rooftop where they filmed The Hangover (Sky Bar at Lebua). However, Bangkok has so many amazing rooftops! The one pictured is Vertigo Moon Bar, although you can find many others for nightlife, nice cocktails, or even an infinity pool.

7. Explore the Temples of Ayutthaya

This ancient kingdom is a day trip from Bangkok and features temples of all shapes and sizes. You can get around the complex but walking, or by riding a bike between the different temples. There are trains from Bangkok’s Hualamphong station to Ayutthaya or you can go by minivan from Victory Monument.

Another amazing day is visiting Pattaya, a small but interesting fishing village! Getting from Bangkok to Pattaya is relatively simple, and makes for the perfect day trip!

Nice to meet you!! I’m a small town Texas girl w Nice to meet you!! I’m a small town Texas girl who has since lived abroad and traveled to over 50 countries.Growing up, travel seemed so unattainable and just not in the stars for me. I was always interested in different cultures and languages, but the biggest cultural experience I had in my small town was the taco truck down the street. Now, I’ve lived in 4 countries, learned 3 foreign languages, and have discovered that travel doesn’t need to be for the uber rich or dual nationality. I’ve created a lifestyle for myself that lends itself to travel, adventure, and new experiences.I’ve discovered countries with a backpack, from the back of a motorcycle (@thetejanabiker), on a student visa, and hopefully soon from the left seat of a single engine airplane (as soon as I get my license!!)If any of this resonates with you, you’re in the right place.
Welcome to the adventure my friends 🗺️
