Know someone about to study abroad? Follow this study abroad gift guide to know exactly the perfect gifts for a friend going abroad for the summer, semester, or the entire year.

The Study Abroad Experience

Studying abroad is an amazing experience that anyone would be lucky to experience. Once you’re away from your friends and family though, it can also be a bit scary! If you want to help your friend, relative, or loved one, a good way to show your support is helping them to prepare with things that they need, or fun things to get them excited about their trip.

Best Gifts for a Friend Going Abroad

1. A guidebook to their new city

Definitely a must once they’ve decide which city to study abroad in. But don’t get them just any guidebook!

When I moved to Paris for the first time, my cousin bought me the 500 Hidden Secrets of Paris book. I treasured that book so much because this book doesn’t tell you all the normal tourist things that you can find on the internet. It dives deep into different neighborhoods and separates activities based on what you want to do.

Besides the Paris book, there is a series of 500 Hidden Secrets books for many cities in the US and Europe. Definitely one of the best gifts for a friend going abroad! This is something useful and that they will treasure.

2. A travel adapter for everyday use

You cannot survive without a travel adapter! Good news is, you don’t really need anything else to plug in bigger electronics like you used to. Today, all you need is a good quality adapter.

Most people tend to buy a travel adapter that works for ALL countries. If I’m being honest, I hate these. They’re bulky and impractical when you actually travel. If you’re going on a trip where you visit several countries, sure! However, if you’re going to study abroad, I think it’s better to buy several small adapters for everyday use.

small travel adapters

If someone is going to study in Europe for example, maybe it’s better to buy a pack of the small travel adapters, and then one universal one in case they ever spend a weekend in the UK (where the electrical outlets are different).

3. A GoPro for amazing shots

Gopro

Every traveler either wants, or already has a GoPro. They’re great for underwater, for adventure, and for just simply filming life! If they’re studying abroad for a substantial amount of time, they will want to document it!

When I studied abroad I had a GoPro and did the super cliché thing of compiling all of my content into a video at the end. Totally worth it and such a great way to keep those memories!

4. A custom passport cover

passport cover

I’m always an advocate for a nice passport cover. You can design them how you wish, and this particular cover is the coolest yet! Keep track of your travels in a fun way by cross-stitching the countries! You can find some really cool and unique ones on Etsy.

5. A great quality carry-on backpack

Here I am using the 28L version for a 2.5 week trip

Listen, this is probably the single-most important thing that they will need! Many study abroad students make the crucial mistake of packing wayyyy too much when they move abroad. Additionally, they will likely be spending their semester traveling almost every weekend! They need a bag that fits all the airline carry-on requirements, as well as having enough space for everything they need.

35L Allpa Travel Pack

The 35L version of this bag is the perfect size for mid-length trips. It’s dimensions are carry-on size, but most of the time you can get away with using it as a personal item.

While I’m here, let me shamelessly brag on my favorite backpack. I got the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L when it first came out (disappointed because there are more colors now and I need them ALL) and have absolutely loved it. It’s great for weekend or weeklong trips. I once even took it across Eastern Europe for an entire month! The best part is that it fits the “carry-on” size for every single airline, even budget. You just have to be careful with weight but normally I can still sneak it on!

If interested, Cotopaxi also offers a one-of-a-kind ‘Del Dia’ backpack. This backpack is made completely from recycled materials and the design of the backpack is always different. I have a daypack that came out orange and blue and yellow. If I were to order the same thing, it might come out in purple, green, and pink this time! If you’re brave enough, you can find it on their website

6. A power bank so you don’t have to slow down

solar powered portable power bank

A power bank is essential for those days when you’re traveling an exploring a new city and don’t want to go back to your accommodation just to charge your phone.

I can’t begin to count the number of times I was traveling and just hoping that my next train would have power outlets. Having a power bank really comes in handy!

I especially love this one because you can charge it yourself, but it’s also solar powered!

7. A language cheat sheet

french cheat sheet

These language cheat sheets really came in handy for me when I had just moved to a new city and needed some refreshers. Also a HUGE help when I was doing my language classes at school!

You can find them on Amazon in a variety of languages and subjects.

8. Hidden zipper scrunchie wallets for convenience

Whether for convenience or for emergencies, these scrunchies are great if you don’t feel like carrying around a wallet with you! Just zip your valuables inside, then carry it around on your wrist or tie it up in your hair.

9. Reversible clothing to have as many options as possible!

splice reversible clothing 2 sided t shirts

Reversible clothing whaaaaat? No really, I’m serious!

When your friend is moving abroad, it’s downright difficult to fit everything they need while still maintaining a bag they can carry (especially if they’ll be gone for MONTHS). With reversible clothing, they can reuse a lot of the clothes and free up space!

10. The Adventure Book to store memories

Last but definitely not least, the Adventure Book.

Journaling is all the rage these days, so The Adventure Book is a must! This book contains a space for each country where you can put photos, old tickets, journal entries, and whatever else your heart desires! Additionally, there are maps, checklists, and fun activities to fill out.

I haven’t fully dedicated my time to decorating mine yet, but for some inspiration I recommend checking out the founder’s instagram! She usually post customers’ designs as well as her own.
